Desires...Life...Truths

Ever thought where this random life is taking us, the frivolities of our own desires cause me to rethink about what's past and present and the thin line separating the two. Somedays are great, some days are dull filled with sorrow and grief which seems so insurmountable at its very peak but vanishes suddenly with a mention of an ecstatic thought, are we designed this way or is it the years of evolution to become better than we are has caused these genetic changes not just in our bodily features but also in our minds.

Maybe, we have become more controlled by our circumstances, have given away to our limitations in a mad conquest of achieving success. Achievement, success have become the buzzwords; competition, rat race have been so ingrained in us that we can't think of a life beyond that. Some do it for richness, some want power and some desire fame. Some desire something called as 'Self Actualization'.  But all these are not absolute terms and therein where lies the difficulty.

I write, but writing to satisfy my wits is one thing and writing to gain recognition, praise, money is other. Sure, one can always sell his work but the pleasure should not be traded off, the day an artist gives away the pleasure of art for lesser things in life the worship of the art is far left behind and the immortality in the work goes away for a toss. Because, when we do things with no ulterior desires be it good or bad, then are we truly getting connected to our being and thus we are free from the fruits of the results. But, is detachment of that order actually possible, or is it just what Gita preaches??

I would like to quote the great Dalai Lama here:
Man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.

The evolution of technology has surely been a great boon for mankind, not just technology per se but the overall betterment be it the infrastructure, industrial revolution, mechanization, swanky gadgets, medical science innovations have surely brought man a great deal of satisfaction and comfort. Created jobs, created people demanding jobs and also created joblessness in people. To my sheer bewilderment man is actually creating things for his comfort but mostly ignoring the fellow humans, creating bridges but not bridging the distances between two humans in plain and simple terms of mankind.

The disparity and divide, be it economic, social or political, is creating changes in our genes, we are becoming more susceptible to changes , but propensity towards embracing change is decreasing. The love for flora and fauna is getting lost and mechanization is ruling the roost. The desire factories have filled their chests while creating sets of consumers to buy their commodities, we have bigger wallets but smaller hearts.

Are we immortal? Is life permanent?  Is anything permanent at all, the happiness, the grief, the pain, the hatred , the desires, the sorrows, the longings? when nothing is permanent why are we putting so much effort into it to land ourselves into greater difficulties? but even the difficulties are not permanent. What do we really want to achieve? Why do we want to achieve that? What is achievement actually?

Death is permanent, death is fixed, death is inevitable. But, does death really happens or is it a way to give us comfort, a desire of an happy ending to the misery. Misery, is life misery? or is life celebration? or is it nothing? just going on from one day to another. I am no one to define life, life cannot be defined because it can be anything for anyone, to relative to be absolute and too absolute to be relative.

Things sometime go in circles in my mind, maybe these are the methods to my madness? Who knows ? Maybe, life is just madness, maybe all our lives are someone's dream. Maybe someday 'HE' wakes up and ends it all, to a point blank.

Supermen of Malegaon: An "Eulogy"

The wonderful movie called "Supermen of Malegaon" endlessly charms you through its sharp wit and unintentional humor. Made on a low budget of Rs. 1 Lakh it is not a movie but the "Making" of the movie titled "Malegaon ka Superman". It carefully depicts the various problems that the director Shaikh Nasir faces in making the movie in the communally divided, low income town of Malegaon which is situated 300 km from Mumbai.

The movie depicts that talent and desire don't need big canvas to thrive upon. If you have a dream and an active will to pursue it, there is no necessity to make it large.

This is the inherent theme of the simple and sweet documentary which won several accolades in film festivals worldwide. The actor Shafiq Sheikh was battling throat cancer throughout the filming and died the next day after the special screening. He just lived enough to fulfil his dream to become a movie star.

You can watch the entire movie here.

What else is a SHIP but a PRISON...

#poem written long back in 2003, after watching the movie Titanic

O’ See when the terrible tempest arose,
And the sea like a hungry lion roar.
To the peak of their power,
Waves tossing up and down.
Looking as if it were a meteor shower,
The people could see the waters frown.
Then came an iceberg in the middle,
Made a hole in one of its deck,
Due to which the whole ship got wrecked.
Lives were scared seeing the death by the side,
The fear of which they couldn't hide.
The anguish and pain of life in it,
The tempest invaded all of it.
Death laid its wreaths spread,
People were dead before their death.
No place to go, no  roads to tread,
As if life itself had become dead.
Each one thought but nothing else,
What else is a ship but a prison?

The city that is...

#wrote this long time back  for the love of my favourite Indian city MUMBAI, still feel that this article is incomplete and short of many more details that my mind still has fresh about the magnificence of this ruined metropolis, but isn't Mumbai is about that, celebrating the incompleteness, for whatever short time I have stayed here I've always felt that I have been living here since ages...

Different Moods of Marine Drive

The city of extremes challenges you to rise above your own incompetency into an unseen world full of mysteries and unknown vistas, unimagined richness and unseen dreams.

Some who are able to live up to those dreams for themselves rise above the rest in the ever rising skyscrapers with a majestic view of Arabian sea, the sound of the other mortals get buried somewhere in the honks of the Audis and Mercedes in traffic jams and become just another noise for the city holding millions of cries.

Mumbai holds more treasure than what often meets the eye, city that is hidden in obscure corners of large slums, in the vast expanse of rising skyscrapers and sometimes in the rhythmic movement of local trains that run like blood in the veins of this great metropolis.

It is difficult for an outsider to believe that ‘FAST’ and ‘SLOW’ local trains run at same speeds, by the time one understands it, a vast multitude of people have already pushed him a few yards away on a crowded suburban station.

Mumbai can be a true mirror image of India owing to its economic diversity. To accurately get a picture of Mumbai’s economic unevenness go to the “Bandra” station once on "East" and once on "West", there is a stark difference, thats startling and generates uninspiring awe.

The Magnificent Bandra-Worli Sea Link
From the magnificent Bandra Worli Sea Link to the nearby Dharavi the largest slum in India, Mumbai has it all. Even south Bombay considered elite and the real Bombay has its share of slums and “Koliwadas”. But, somehow this aspect of the city makes it truly great.

Mumbai has some truly breathtaking views to offer to a raring traveler, walk down the entire stretch of Marine Drive anytime during the day or night, you would find a wonderful synthesis of natural and manmade wonders with a beautiful Arabian Sea curving down on right, to the skyscrapers, Wankhede, Brabourne stadiums, Air India Building, Oberoi hotel on the left.

One can experience the beautiful rise and fall in sea waters sitting on the pavements created for visitors. It’s not hard to spot hard stony masses of rocks making their way out in the middle of the Sea on a low tide, whereas on a high tide the stormy waves of ferocious water would well wash your feet with their exhilarating exuberance.

The serenity that one feels on a typical evening at the Haji Ali with sea link appearing at a distance, Imperial towers and  Antilla towering on the other side, as one goes through the slippery pavement into the sea to the holy shrine, one can feel himself entering into a whole new aura of pureness and divinity alike.

Bombay as it was called by the British has retained its soul captured in tiny fragments of life strewn around its entire length. Formed by reclaiming the land from the sea by joining seven islands, the land and the sea though distinct from each come together and become one entity which forms a part of the city’s huge ecosystem. Thus, Mumbai doesn't seem to encompass few hundred miles but stretches its arms as far as the eyes of an avid traveller go out in the vast wild sea, uncontrolled, uninhibited, pulsating with every wave of the sea and dancing with every drop of rain.

That thing called love...

#wrote it at 2 A.M just before going to sleep before my last midsem exam in first semester MBA at IIT Kharagpur

In my dreams intoxicated,
I have found you in many shades,
In many colours
And many songs,
In timeless eternity,
and ruthless desires...

Where I have found you smiling,
At our lives which suddenly went by,
Uncontrolled by our presence,
Oblivion to our demands...

But still they yielded,
Truths which were unknown,
Life which was meant to be,
Wasted without your presence...

Time which was never meant to be with you,
Our fates have bought us here,
To celebrate our togetherness,
Our joys and sorrows,
Share our smiles and pain,
Be one in duality,
Yet be twice as powerful...

So that our companionship,
Transcends the petty issues,
That surround the people and the world,
And be intertwined in each other thoughts,
So that it’s not possible to separate us,
And forever we,
bind in,
That thing called LOVE....

I think of you...

#wrote this poem in 2010, just sitting idle, reflecting on people in my life, reflecting on love, my friends, foes and many more...

On some lonely nights,
When stars lose their light,
To the moon so bright,
I think of you...

Blinded by your dreams,
Caught in your arms,
Trapped is my soul and,
I think of you...

On some mornings,
When the birds chirp around,
And the sun goes high,
I think of you...

Thinking of your smile,
The day goes fine,
But when it gets dusky,
I think of you...

Often in my sadness,
Always in my happiness,
You are there with me and,
I think of you...

Sometimes when I lose faith,
And my trust goes blind,
On the people of this world,
I think of you...

Sometimes like a wind,
Sometimes like a storm,
Your memories hit me and,
I think of you...

In my dreams and in my being,
In my pain and in my relief,
In my lives and in my deaths,
I think of you,
I think of you...

Forgotten lines...

#wrote this poem in 2010 in the college canteen, for someone who said to me that I never write poems for her. I did not archived this poem then in my collection, an year later she posted this poem as her Facebook status. Ironically, I could not recall that it was the same poem that I had written earlier. I wrote the second paragraph at that time as an explanation to this situation that words might be forgotten or they might not be there at all, but the feelings are always the same...

When words are not enough to express,
And I fail to impress,
Never think I don’t love you,
Coz it’s not about loving you,
It’s about loving my own self,
With the air of purity you gave,
In my life and made it beautiful,
Let me drenched in your everlasting fragrance,
Like dew drops settle on leaf buds,
Settle on my emotions, my heart,
For the time immemorial...

I might forget the words,
But feelings never change,
Words are just a medium to convey,
Might not be enough to take your heart away,
Don’t go by my words;
Some words are said in a fray,
Don’t go by my deeds,
Some deeds are done astray,
Don’t go by my heart,
Coz it may stop beating someday,
Remember the time we spent,
And Hope those memories never end.

Time will set me free....

#wrote this poem way back in 2005 while I was solving some maths problems in my 10th Grade, somehow the starting line struck me and I wrote it. Considering, I had such deep thoughts way back when I was 16, I feel I am not becoming any smarter from then, rather a faint shadow of what I used to be...

Time will set me free,
For I am a traveller with no shady tree.
Walking along the path of life is tough,
The roads have curves, they are long and rough.
Peace and solitude no way to be found,
Life is even worse than a hound.
Work is to be done day and night,
What else is life but a constant fight?
Things that attract us are tough to get,
Without them we cannot set.
Hope and despair invade our minds.
They give us courage of unmatched kind.
The zeal and enthusiasm push us ahead,
They remind us of the roads to tread.
The hectic world, so boring alas,
We have to live here till our last.
I wish I was born free as a bird,
Who moves about in his own world.
No fear, No worries, No anxiety in his life,
Life for him not a constant strife.
I wish I was born tall as a tree,
That gives fruit and shade for free.
I wish I was born large as a cloud,
Gives us rain making noises aloud.
I wish I was like the Sun so bright,
Gives to the world the life giving light.
But since I am born a petty human,
I wish the time will set me free.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan - Demystified

This is the trailer of Shahrukh Khan's forthcoming movie JAB TAK HAI JAAN, it was released today at 13:00 hours.

Along with Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma will mark their maiden presence in a Yash Chopra directed movie, whose last directorial ventures were Veer Zaara(2004) and Dil to pagal hai(1997).
Waiting for November when this movie will finally hit the theatres.

The beautiful poetry that captures the essence of this trailer is down below:

Teri aankhon ki namkeen mastiyaan
Teri hansi ki beparwah gustaakhiyaan
Teri zulfon ki lehraati angdaaiyaan
Nahin bhoolunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, Jab tak hai jaan

Tera haath se haath chhodna
Tera saayon ka rukh modna
Tera palat ke phir na dekhna
Nahin maaf karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, Jab tak hai jaan

Baarishon mein bedhadak tere naachne se
Baat Baat pe bewajah tere roothne se
Chhoti chhoti teri bachkaani badmaashiyon se
Mohabbat karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, Jab tak hai jaan

Tere jhoothe kasme vaadon se
Tere jalte sulagte khaabon se
Teri bereham duaaon se
Nafrat karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, Jab tak hai jaan

While the poetry is not path-breaking or poetic masterpiece as Zindai Milegi Na Dobara's or Udaan's poetry for that matter, but it goes well with this trailer, which hides much more than it reveals about the storyline of the movie.

A similar third outing from Yash Chopra after having two girls and Shahrukh , Dil to Pagal hai (Madhuri, Karishma), Veer Zaara(Preity, Rani) and now Jab Tak Hai Jaan(Anushka, Katrina). The leading ladies have undergone changes as per the generations but SRK surpasses time and boundaries.

Several people are trying to encrypt the storyline by seeing the trailer. But, lets not spoil the charm by indulging in utopian spoilers. Just wait for the magic of romance king to sweep you of your feets yet again, as this movie also marks the return of Shahrukh in his most known Romantic genre after experimenting a lot with action(Ra-One), issue based movies(My name is Khan) in the recent years.

It will also be interesting to see with the sudden and dramatic rise of Salman Khan on box office cash counters and Aamir Khan's 3 idiots which still continues to be the top grosser in Bollywood ever, if Jab Tak Hai Jaan would finally be able to resurrect Shahrukh's top position not just in the hearts of masses but also on the Box office.

Lessons of life, through System architecture!!!

Disclaimer: This post is prepared as a requirement for MIS Assignment#0, Autumn Semester 2012, VGSOM-IIT Kharagpur.

I was walking deep down in that long, winding, sullen road, paths strewn with dry maple leaves, cool breeze blowing. Yes, coming to IIT was always my dream but this dream could’ve been fulfilled years ago at the time of BTech, but now that I was here there was something missing, some unfulfilled desire or some dream. Maybe a better understanding of my goals and aspirations was needed. But, the hectic MBA schedule didn’t provide time for such introspections. But, now that I had some time especially after my mid sems were over I decided to roam about the long and never ending roads of IIT kharagpur. Suddenly, a voice stopped me, a deep but a subtle voice, there was a boy standing about the same age as mine, he asked me about me.

Stranger: Are you looking for anything?

ME: No, was just roaming about.

Stranger: Okay, I studied at this place once.

ME: Oh that means you are an alum, nice to meet you, I have been too much bugged down by the hectic schedule here.

Stranger: Don’t be, enjoy this place, studies are a part of curriculum, its important that in addition to that you enjoy this place.

ME: By the way, I forgot to ask your name?

Stranger: My name is Rohit Joshi, I studied Computer Science here, got admission in 2000 batch.

I wondered that he is looking almost the same age as me, how can he graduate so early, nevertheless.

Rohit Joshi: So, tell me some interesting things from your curriculum, do you have any subject which is closely related to Computer Science.

I told him we have a subject called as MIS which stands for Management Information System, he asked me what had been covered till now in that subject, so I told him that we have covered System Architecture.

Rohit Joshi: Can you explain me some of the system architecture concepts? Been a long time since I last studied computer science?

ME: Okay, I will but in exchange, you should also share with me some of your experiences

Rohit Joshi: Okay, I am ready, I will give you some good tips, how to excel in your life, studies, career etc.

ME: There are four types of architecture:
Single tier
Two tier
Three tier
Multitier architecture.

The first kind of system is a SINGLE TIER SYSTEM : in which the data and the application(PL-Presentation logic & BL-Business logic) are on the same physical hardware. For example: laptops, desktops, servers etc.

Rohit Joshi: In similar way in life we have our own identity which we can compare with a single tier system, it’s our own space where we should do whatever it takes to keep us happy and satisfied. Be, it in the terms of health, money etc. We should not compromise this personal space for anything on earth. So, never be so worked up that you don’t find time for yourself.

ME: Wow!! That’s a cool comparison, let’s see if you have something for 2-tier as well.

Rohit Joshi: Tell me what is it?

ME: The second kind is called the TWO TIER CLIENT SERVER ARCHITECTURE: in which data is stored in a different location and the applications to access it in another. They are connected by various LAN cables. Client-server architecture offers both operational and performance advantages. First, it better accommodates the decentralized business environment; business logic resides and executes where it is more appropriate: on the end-users' desktops. Enterprise-wide data is integrated and managed by the server. Second, it offers a cost effective solution that allows for increased performance due to load balancing and better resource utilization on both desktop and server computers, and scalability and growth to more clients and new client application software. But the demerits are its high bandwidth requirements and  maintenance/version control of the software.

Rohit Joshi: In a similar way, two tier architecture represents the interpersonal relationships we have with our peers, we should care about them. Be, it our parents, friends, relatives or whosoever it might be. Proper time, care and concern should be given to these relations, because anyone can earn money, excel and become successful but few can do so in a way so as not to hamper interpersonal relationships.

ME: That is some cool advice and mantra, now I tell you about 3-tier architecture.

Rohit Joshi: Okay!!!

ME: The two-tier client-server architecture evolved into the THREE TIER ARCHITECTURE when the need arose to support more complex applications. The three tiers run only the user interface on the end-user computer, an application server that runs the business logic and processes the data is differently located, and it accesses the database server."
Then there is MULTI TIER ARCHITECTURE: This means splitting a system into more than just a client layer and a database layer. Instead, we have the clients, and they only deal with presenting data to the user and sending changes back to the server. The server then takes care of the business logic, and gets and returns the raw data to one or more database servers. The advantages are better maintainability (business logic can be changed without updating every client machine).

Rohit Joshi: The three and multitier architecture covers the essence that how you behave with the people of the world, when you are in a group, in a team, in your college, school, company etc. How well you are able to guide people, convince people and motivate your juniors and learn from your seniors. Your attitude with not so well-off people with your servants, workers all come under it. God, is keeping a tab of everything, and people know you by your behavior with others.

ME: Wow!!! I am amazed you have compared the entire computer architecture with relationships in life. I am hugely inspired by your words, By the way I forgot to ask what do you do these days, I mean where do you work.

Rohit Joshi: I…….ummmm……..Goodbye and take care…

And, suddenly I realized he was no more there, I was amazed, where did he suddenly disappear.

I came back to my room and opened the student directory of IIT Kharagpur.
Year: 2000
Dept: Computer Science and Engineering
Name: Rohit Joshi

What I saw next swiped me of my feet.

Status: Department topper, discontinued after third year, died in a tragic road accident, by a speeding car in the campus.

I became very disturbed after reading it, somehow I managed to sleep that night, At, night I saw a dream, I saw Rohit,

He said to me…

Life has never been kind to me. But, I learned a very important lesson from my life. However, short your life may be, make sure you live it well, you don’t know which moment might be your last. Do, good wherever you are, don’t just put too much pressure on you, enjoy life, nurture relationships, I miss my parents, I miss my friends, Moreover, I miss IIT Kharagpur, that’s probably why my soul refuses to let go from its magnificence…I lived here, I died here, I'll live here forever......

About Love

"Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.Because this is what love is.Love is not breathlessness,it is not excitement,it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are.Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.Like roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from their branches you found that you are one tree and not two."

My Favourite Story: Trees that wood

Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, "Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty."

Then the second tree said, "Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull."

Finally the third tree said, "I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me."

After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, "This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter" ... and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest.

At the second tree a woodsman said, "This looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the shipyard." The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship.

When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, "I don't need anything special from my tree so I'll take this one", and he cut it down.

When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams.

Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn't think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood and said "Peace" and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat.

Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it.

The moral of this story is that when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don't always know what God's plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best.
